There was a factory upgrade to the 4.7 which fixed the previous variator issues that both the 4.2 & 4.7 suffered from.
Cool thanks. So to be clear, the 4.2 was never given this factory upgrade so still at risk of the issue arising ?

Sounds like you might be coming from an Alfa background which is how I got into Maserati. I had some pretty expensive Alfas with various V6 engines and thought I was use to big bills - I was in for a shock with Maserati costs.

That said they are different cars and you need to adjust accordingly, £2-3k would be a reasonable estimate maybe not every year but probably over time.

Yes, that's right. Mainly 156s, the TS, 2.5V6, and then JTS (I managed to blow up the engine giving it some hard throttle, but oil was low !).
Always wanted the GTA, but never attained it.
Then a couple of 159s, but they were never set up as sweetly as the 156 handling wise.

Interesting to see that some parts (e.g. sun visor mirror) are shared between the two marques. I still can't get over how expensive the Maserati parts are......I get it's the Maserati Tax......... What is even more perplexing is why the specialist garages (labour) rates are so expensive when compared to (non-specialist) independent garages. I get that some of the stuff is quite specialist and you are paying for that knowledge, but why is a standard service upwards of £400 to £500 (maybe I'm not looking at the right garages!).

I’m paying £550+ vat for an annual service at AV Engineering, both for the 360 and the GT.
Essentially both Ferrari engines (F131B & F136)
Think thats a fairly standard service cost from independents that know what they are doing.

Another thing to think about is Infotainment.

There is 'no-Bose', 'Bose speakers', and 'Bose'. Bose has two extra knobs either side of the screen. Many cars, like the one below, are described as 'Bose' but are really just 'Bose speakers'.
@conero of the late-lamented SportsItalia used to offer an Carplay/Auto touchscreen interface upgrade, but not for 'Bose'' cars. Not sure what the situation is now with that.

Also there is 'single-CD' and 'multi-CD'. The multi CD unit is under the steering wheel. It is my understanding that only if you have multi-CD, do you then have the wiring to install Loudlink.

Never got round to a 159 and I have never been a fan of JTS engines.

I started with Suds, then 33s before moving on to Alfetta GTVs, Giuliettas, 75s & GTV 6 transaxles finally ending up with the SZ I still have. Daily runners have been various 155s, 156 saloon and SW, 147s, 916 GTVs and Spiders. Still have a 155 Q4, 156 SW and a transaxle Giulietta.

All bar the Q4 cheaper to run than any Maser
